Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato, Part III--The Video

The DVD that goes along with the Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato exhibit, which is currently at the Detroit Science Center, was absolutely worth the price I paid for it and more. It's beautifully filmed. The colors and music enthralled me.

I didn't know when I'd have time to watch it, but believe it or not, we had 1/2 hour left in my classes yesterday after our finals review. (P.S. This NEVER happens in my classroom. Most of the time, students don't have time to breathe, they are working so mu… Continue

Was This For Real?

Part two of my most recent blog:

For the first time in my 37 year teaching career, a student "passed out" in one of my classes. It was during my seminar hour, so there weren't too many students in the classroom.

The student in question is a special needs student, with many problems. The student had just returned to my classroom from a visit with the school social worker. It seems that this student always wants me to know what is going on, so the student mentioned not sleeping the previous nigh… Continue

Dear Emily,

I could not agree with you more. I miss teaching but I do not miss this scenario.
In most cases, students want to do their work and do very well.
It always amazed me that parents would do this. Instead of working to solve the problem, it is easier to do this kind of thing, I guess. It is sad for all concerned when this happens because they are setting a pattern for future failures and disappointment. Self-esteem is built by overcoming difficulty, in my humble opinion.

Parents as Enablers

I've had two exhausting days in a row. I'll blog about each separately.

One student, a fairly nice boy but a struggling student, has been absent a lot (13 excused absences as of today). He's carrying a 51% average, including all missing work that he is eligible to make up because his absences are excused. When he's here, he generally turns in his work, though it's average to below most of the time.

The other day he comes in and tells me that he wants to withdraw from the class and that he does… Continue

Japanese Taiko Drum Demonstration

Japanese Taiko drums are amazing. They are made from heavy Keyaki wood from the Zelkova tree. I know this because I just came from a concert in our auditorium given by one of our German teachers, Brian Sole, and his lovely wife, Mayumi, both who studied Taiko drumming while they were living in Japan.

One of the drums is over 3 1/2 feet in diameter and weighs over 220 pounds. Almost all of the drums are made with one piece of wood, including the large one.

Brian and Mayumi played three songs on… Continue
