Emilia, This is a great topic. Look at how much discussion it has produced. Should we do something about this in our next newsletter? Do you have any ideas as to how to do this? Let's discuss next Sat.

The magic wand is humor and it sends good vibes a student's way. It's only five bucks and I only have a few dollars left in my budget. This is not the same Marcia--this is Marcia Tate, not Marcia Roberts. Marcia Roberts supposedly works for Marci...

Emilia, Good points. Jennie really lucked out having her as our invited speaker. I remember hearing roars of laughter coming from the room where Marcia was giving her workshop at our conference. People really loved it. I will try to incorporate so...

I like projects. I think projects help students learn the material through rehearsal; they also motivate students by giving them a sense of concrete accomplishment. I tell my students what they are going to do and how they are going to do it. I s...

I think that throwing projects out completely is throwing the baby out with the bath water. Yes, I agree, there are some projects better left undone, but if the projects are meaningful, they can be a great learning experience for students. They al...

Hola Emily! I always enjoy reading your blog posts. However, I am a big project based learning fan. i usually have my students work cooperatively on a culminating group project for each thematic unit. Here is a selection of what they did for our u...

Milia, It sounds like you had fun. (If it didn't bore you, the students would say it was fun) Your summary of this workshop was very insightful. It made me laugh and it made me reflect that being an educator is the best. Thanks for sharing.

French, Italian, Spanish
What level(s) do you teach (if applicable)?
High School
About Me:
¡Hola! I am Michigan born, raised and educated and very proud of it! I have been teaching Spanish at Northville High School in Northville, MI, since 1973, when I graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in Spanish, a minor in French and two years of studies of Italian. In 1993, I was elected to the Executive Board of the Michigan World Language Association (MIWLA), and am now serving as its Executive Secretary. I love to travel, and have been to every region of Spain (except the islands), all over Western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and of course, many states in the US and provinces in Canada. My primary teaching area is Spanish II at the high school level. I am one of those geeks who loves teaching about the preterite vs. the imperfect and the subjunctive. I have presented sessions at MIWLA, Central States, and ACTFL Conferences. One of the best practices of my classroom is the implementation of student-led conferences. I have been married to my husband Peter (an art teacher) since 1976 and we have one son, Eric, who is a graduate of Michigan State University and is also studying to become a teacher! Our cats, Mittens and Fred, keep us company and are our best little friends.

Classroom Projects: Blessing or Curse?

Last night I was grading papers at the kitchen table, my usual hang-out between 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM almost every night. My husband was in the living room watching a new program called "In The Middle". Suddenly he yelled out "'Milia! Turn on channel 7!" I reached for the remote and turned to the proper channel. Here is this poor little kid, about 10 or 11 years old, discussing his school project with his mother. He just happened to be building an ancient pyramid...out of SUGAR CUBES! I screamed o… Continue

Do Workshops Grow Dendrites?

Yesterday, Northville middle school and high school teachers attended a workshop given by Dr. Marcia Tate, of DeKalb County, Georgia, entitles "Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites." As you know teachers are apprehensive of most workshops. I can count the number of workshops that my district has sponsored that have been beneficial on one hand, and in 37 years, that's not a very good batting average. However, this one was very informative and entertaining. Even though I knew most of the material, it d… Continue

"Spain...On The Road Again" in Reruns

Last Friday night I was flipping through channels (as usual) and saw that one of my favorite programs of all times, "Spain...On The Road Again" was in reruns. This program, on PBS, features Mario Batali, the famous Food Network Iron Chef, actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Claudia Bassols (from Barcelona) and Mark Bittman, a food and wine critic from the New York Times. Together they traverse Spain looking for the best in history, culture, and cuisine. They hit almost every autonomous region and eat… Continue

What's Wrong With A B+?

Hi all, well, time to blog about Parent Teacher Conferences again.

I really enjoy meeting my students' parents. I am really fortunate to have good, motivated students. However, the helicopters come out in full force from time to time.

One young lady's mother was especially annoyed that her daughter is not getting an A at this time. She has an 87.5% average, which is a B+. I simply told her mother, "She's a very good student." And she is. I like this girl very much. She can light up the room wi… Continue

MIWLA Conference 2009

It's taken me almost the whole weekend to recover from the MIWLA Conference 2009. I slept until 9:10 AM on Saturday and 9:15 AM today. I also took a long nap both afternoons.

I drove from Northville to Lansing on Wednesday night. Flora, Daryl and I had dinner at Nuevo Vallarta, which is in walking distance from the Causeway Bay Hotel, formerly the Holiday Inn South. The food was decent--I had chiles rellenos, and though they were a bit greasy, I liked them. The service was friendly and speedy.… Continue

Hi
I am in contact with Larcinesi's all over the world now! I didn't know I had so many cousins. For language buffs: My last name (Larcinesi "Lar-chin-a-zi") is Italian but it has been mixed up over the years. L' is like O' in O'Brian.
Arc(h) is because I had an Archbishop in my ancestry when last names were taken. The rest of the name has to do with where my family lived. Most Larcinesi's have an e on the end instead of an i. That got screwed up at Ellis Island.
Glad you have some folks in Iran interested in your group. It shows there is some sanity there. My daughter just got back from North Korea and will be heading to Iran soon. She is in China right now. Here and her husband are global nomads and have visited almost 70 countries. I certainly wouldn't go where they go and am on edge when she is gone.

Hi Emily,
Thanks for "friending" me. I think MIWLA Connect is great if only because it gives dinosaurs like me experience with things like writing on one's wall. I loved your idea of rapping about grammar rules. I have been trying to think of way to incorporate rapping into my lessons and I like that idea. Give Flora a big abrazo for me.

Amitiés,
Margarita

Hi Emily! How are you? That's great that the Spanish department is growing so much. How is everything else going at the school?
We were just home for Christmas. We had a really nice time with the family. Things are going really well here. I really like the school I'm at.
Thanks for your message!
Talk to you soon,
Tiffany
