Things in Northville are going to change, and not for the better. Parents want what is best for their kids, but are unsympathetic to teachers' needs, and really unaware of what's going on in the building. We still are not interested in opening our c…

Things are not looking good in Northville. Rumors are abounding. They want to cut $4.3 million dollars from our district's budget. This could be a cut in our programs by 25%. The District is seeking input from all stake holders at a meeting next wee…

I really like this idea. I will pass this on to the Spanish teachers at my school. It seems that this activity would really bring the grammar and culture alive for the students.

Profile Information

What language(s) interest you?
French, Italian, Spanish
What level(s) do you teach (if applicable)?
High School
About Me:
¡Hola! I am Michigan born, raised and educated and very proud of it! I have been teaching Spanish at Northville High School in Northville, MI, since 1973, when I graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in Spanish, a minor in French and two years of studies of Italian. In 1993, I was elected to the Executive Board of the Michigan World Language Association (MIWLA), and am now serving as its Executive Secretary. I love to travel, and have been to every region of Spain (except the islands), all over Western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and of course, many states in the US and provinces in Canada. My primary teaching area is Spanish II at the high school level. I am one of those geeks who loves teaching about the preterite vs. the imperfect and the subjunctive. I have presented sessions at MIWLA, Central States, and ACTFL Conferences. One of the best practices of my classroom is the implementation of student-led conferences. I have been married to my husband Peter (an art teacher) since 1976 and we have one son, Eric, who is a graduate of Michigan State University and is also studying to become a teacher! Our cats, Mittens and Fred, keep us company and are our best little friends.

State of Mind Gallery

I have a suggestion for you next time you are out finishing your holiday shopping. There is a beautiful new art gallery at the 12 Oaks Mall called the State of Mind Gallery. It's located on the second floor near Macy's. Forty-five Michigan artists have rented this large space and are working there, so the people you meet on the floor are the artists themselves. You will find all types of art media there, from glass to paintings, ceramics, woodworking, jewelry, metal sculptures with and without g… Continue

Class Reunions--A Socio-Educational Experience

Last Friday night I attended my 40th (gulp!) high school class reunion. The Livonia Bentley High School Class of 1969 held a combined reunion with the classes of 1968 and 1970 at the Radisson Hotel in Livonia. Over two hundred people attended, including spouses. There was a decent turnout, but I was hoping for more--there were about 150 classmates, and Bentley was a big high school--it held over 2500 people.

It was a pleasure being on the reunion committee, even though at times I had to drag my… Continue

You Know You're Maltese When...

Some people know that I am half Italian. I speak the language a bit, have been to Italy several times and had a big fat Italian wedding. That's on my mom's side of the family, which is the culture we celebrated since my paternal grandparents died when I was very young.

My father, Charles Serafa, was born in Malta. If you don't know where Malta is, the toe of Italy kicks Sicily. Malta is just south of Sicily. It's a small island surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. I do not speak Maltese, but I… Continue

Chinese Language Association of Michigan (CLAM) Conference

This morning, MIWLA President Margaret Cottrill and I attended the CLAM Conference at Wayne State University. We were invited session presenters. Our topic was "Practically Speaking", which also is the theme of the MIWLA Conference for October, 2010.

Immediately after we had parked the car and left the parking structure, we found little signs with the CLAM logo showing us the way to the conference center. Margaret and I were excited. Looking for the next sign was like a little treasure hunt on… Continue

Mini Field Trip--The Historical Museum

My students participated in a mini field trip today, courtesy of my friend Pam Kaatz. Pam is a retired Spanish teacher from Texas, who owns a company called "The Color Connection." This website, www.colorconnection.com, is a must visit for any Spanish teacher. Pam is the creator of the famous Spanish Verb Wall, (www.verbwall.com) which I have premanently affixed to the wall in my classroom. She is also responsible… Continue

Hi
I am in contact with Larcinesi's all over the world now! I didn't know I had so many cousins. For language buffs: My last name (Larcinesi "Lar-chin-a-zi") is Italian but it has been mixed up over the years. L' is like O' in O'Brian.
Arc(h) is because I had an Archbishop in my ancestry when last names were taken. The rest of the name has to do with where my family lived. Most Larcinesi's have an e on the end instead of an i. That got screwed up at Ellis Island.
Glad you have some folks in Iran interested in your group. It shows there is some sanity there. My daughter just got back from North Korea and will be heading to Iran soon. She is in China right now. Here and her husband are global nomads and have visited almost 70 countries. I certainly wouldn't go where they go and am on edge when she is gone.

Hi Emily,
Thanks for "friending" me. I think MIWLA Connect is great if only because it gives dinosaurs like me experience with things like writing on one's wall. I loved your idea of rapping about grammar rules. I have been trying to think of way to incorporate rapping into my lessons and I like that idea. Give Flora a big abrazo for me.

Amitiés,
Margarita

Hi Emily! How are you? That's great that the Spanish department is growing so much. How is everything else going at the school?
We were just home for Christmas. We had a really nice time with the family. Things are going really well here. I really like the school I'm at.
Thanks for your message!
Talk to you soon,
Tiffany
