Congrats to Toni Theisen! ACTFL Teacher of the YEAR!!!

I just received the ACTFL magazine in the mail today and on P. 26 is a picture of Toni announcing the honor! I read about her National Board Certification of Professional Teaching Standards (http://www.nbpts.org/become_a_candidate) and recommended it to our FL department. It's just what the doctor ordered!! Thanks Toni and congratulations again!!

Dear Jo,

I wanted to let you know that your name comes to me very highly recommended as a session or workshop presenter. I hope you will please consider presenting a session at the Michigan World Language Associations' annual conference in Lansing on October 15 - 16, 2009. If you are interested, please submit a proposal at www.miwla.org

Thanks

Let me know if I can help you with anything re: the trip. I allow all kids to go, not just French and Spanish kids, because it gives EVERYONE who goes the awareness that we need to learn languages. I bring some adults too, though too many wanted to come on this one! But it's good PR for languages, esp. when they realize the tour director knows 3 or 4 languages well enough to "se debrouille) in every country! You can customize your trip any way you want -- have a scavenger hunt in a city or?? But I mostly just let kids experience everything that they can.

We had a French exchange student named Sarah when my Sarah was 16. That Sarah spent two summers at our house and then my Sarah went home with her to her house by the sea (Le Croisic), and I came to pick her up, got to know the family, etc. So the Sarahs decided it was time they saw each other again. That's how this Paris weekend began. Then we added in cousin Emily and sister-in-law Therese who've never been to Paris before.

I announced the trip and put posters up all over school, then handed out a flier with the itinerary on one side and the announcement of a mandatory parent meeting on the other side. I told kids their parents have to come to this if they want to go. I also sent home a letter about it and gave a few points for a parent signature so that I knew that every parent knew about it (the meeting.) I didn't give any details about cost or even dates, just told people to come to the meeting. The meeting was at the end of the school day and was packed with parents. I have always found that about 95% of people who come to the meeting will go on the trip. I gave them 2 weeks to sign up. This is really a key because if you give them forever, they will forget about it.
At the meeting, I give them everything in a folder. I will see if I can email the Pages file, but I think it's too big. I tell them I've used NETC before with great success, plus since I do this every 2 years, there are recent pics for them to see. It's easier once you go regularly because of course the younger sibs get to go.
Good luck getting the word out!!! I will get in touch with you next week -- I'm heading to Paris tomorrow for a long weekend!

Hi, Joanne! Glad to see you'll be doing a trip with NETC! I have nearly 20 signed up for my trip with NETC from Barcelona to Rome in 2010. It's great fun to look forward to another "voyage of discovery."

Where will you be heading?

I'm blown away by your videos alone. Do you mind a shout out in the twitter-world? I know a couple of French teachers that are following me, who would love your work.

Glad you're here, as I'm hoping we can have you come to Michigan one of these days to do a workshop. I thought this might be another format for you to connect with people who might be interested in your soon-to-be-released textbook.
